What is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is an inflammatory condition of the fascia which connects the heel to the toes and is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The pain is worse first thing in the morning upon standing. Usually it feels better through the day, but prolonged walking and or running may exacerbate the condition.
Because the fascia has a tendency to tighten at night and is injured upon standing in the morning, I recommend a supportive slipper to be worn at all times, but it is especially important upon waking to prevent injury. Properly fitted shoes with support may alleviate the condition.
Shoe Selection for Plantar Fasciitis
If there is ever any question about shoes, I recommend making an appointment to see Dr. Schuman. He can analyze gait and alignment and custom make orthotics if necessary. Proper alignment and support during walking and during work outs is extremely important for recovery of this condition.
In combination with proper support, acupuncture is very helpful in treating this condition. Acupuncture can promote blood circulation to the plantar fascia and reduce inflammation. Assessing the musculature of the lower limb in particular the gastrocnemius, soleus, and tibialis muscles to see if they are creating tension along the fascia.
The acupuncture points UB 62 and K6 below the lateral and medial malleolus treat are located near nerve branches that innervate the plantar fascia. Treating these areas with electroacupuncture can help break the pain cycle by releasing endogenous opiates and decreasing pain. By decreasing pain, the contraction aspect of the pain cycle is reduced.
Physical therapy is an important aspect of treatment in plantar fascia conditions. After resetting the muscle fibers with acupuncture, physical therapy is utilized to strengthen weak muscles and mobilize over-active muscles helping prevent the condition from reoccurring.
In New York City, our feet is the primary mode of transportation. Treating plantar fasciitis soon after it occurs will prevent the condition from becoming chronic and will result in faster recovery.
