What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is an unnatural curvature in your spine where the spine bows or twists out of position.
It is unknown as to what causes scoliosis but there is some evidence that it is hereditary.
There are three types of scoliosis:
- Idiopathic: unknown origin
- Congenital: found in newborns and infants. Can develop an S or C shaped curve
- Neuromuscular: Found in people with an underlying neuro-muscular condition such as cerebral palsy, spina-bifida, or muscular dystrophy.
The condition has a tendency to become worse with age. Scoliosis is usually diagnosed in children between 10-15 years of age.
Symptoms of scoliosis include pain, tightness and stiffness in joint and muscles.
If left untreated significant musculoskeletal pain patterns can occur later with age. A scoliotic spinal curve greater than 50 degrees will usually require surgery because the twisting spine will place pressure on lung and cardiac function.
