Pelvic Floor Therapy FAQs

How long is the initial pelvic floor therapy appointment? What about follow-ups?

Every pelvic floor physical therapy session is 45 minutes long including the initial evaluation on the first visit. During this time together we can discuss your current condition, allow for adequate time to change your clothing as well as prepare for treatment, and leave enough time to work on internal and/or external treatments.

What conditions can pelvic floor therapy help me with?

Pelvic floor physical therapy can help with a variety of conditions. Some of the most common conditions we treat at CSC+M include but are not limited to pelvic pain, endometriosis, pelvic girdle pain, stress urinary incontinence, urge urinary incontinence, constipation, fecal incontinence, pelvic floor weakness, vaginismus, and pelvic organ prolapse.

Are you accepting new pelvic floor therapy patients?

Yes! We are currently accepting new pelvic floor patients. Please call the office at (212) 475-8104 to inquire about appointment availability.

What is the cost for a pelvic floor therapy session and is this covered by insurance?

Cost of care will vary depending on your health insurance coverage and services needed/requested. Please call the front desk for to discuss your questions regarding pricing.

What can I expect in a Pelvic Floor Evaluation?

Each evaluation is performed specific to the patient and their case, so no two evaluations will be the same. Generally, we will start the process by discussing medical history.

Then, we can perform a full body movement screen, testing of joint range of motion and strength, and an external evaluation of the areas of concern.

After this, we might continue on to an internal evaluation to further examine the tone, strength, and reflexes associated with the pelvic floor muscles. Each step of the evaluation is handled with continual patient consent and with detailed steps prior to performing the physical exam.

I am pregnant, can we still exercise and treat the pelvic floor?

Yes, but each case is handled separately and specific to the person. Exercises for women who are pregnant are generally limited to their level of function prior to becoming pregnant. Internal manual treatments of the pelvic floor will be avoided during this time.

In physical therapy, we can address pelvic floor relaxation and strength using external cues and certain “low intensity” exercises modeled around yoga, pilates, and prior levels of activity.

How can manual therapy help me?

Manual therapy performed both internally and externally can help your muscles resume a normal tone, and increase your control of muscle contraction. We do not use metal tools like a speculum here in physical therapy, so manual therapy will be performed using only the therapist’s hands. Generally, many patients will also receive instructions on how to do this type of therapy in the comfort of their own home as part of their treatment program.

What is a kegel and when should I do them?

Kegels are pelvic floor contractions that can help stabilize your core and decrease dysfunction in your body. Kegels will be prescribed as part of a pelvic floor home exercise program depending on your specific condition, and ability to perform this type of strengthening on your own with the cues provided. Kegels alone are not always the best to treat dysfunction, so please check in with a pelvic floor therapist prior to using kegels in your own home program.

How often do I need to come in for my pelvic floor treatments?

Each program will be designed specific to the person, their availability, and examination findings. Generally, programs are 1-2x/week for 4-6 weeks with an emphasis of performing a home exercise program in addition to in house treatments.

Is pelvic floor therapy only for women, or can men get this type of treatment also?

Both men and women have a pelvic floor, and so can qualify for pelvic floor treatments. Symptoms may differ, but the general examination and intervention is similar. Some symptoms that might affect both men and women include pelvic pain, constipation, and incontinence.

If you are unsure if pelvic floor therapy is right for you, please give us a call for a free consultation with our pelvic floor therapists to determine your eligibility.

S.B.

Prior to finding out about Anastasia, I thought I was doomed to the embarrassing stresses that come with incontinence. Utilizing the strategies and knowledge that Anastasia shared, my symptoms began to dissipate after each session—I’m learning how to take back my life and I’m so happy!!!

The actual treatment and my reduction in hip pain and increase in mobility is really life changing. Anastasia taught me how to treat myself at home with the wand and with pelvic floor exercises. I currently treat myself 3x a week to keep my hip pain at bay. I also appreciated the informative lunch session about pelvic floor therapy to dive deeper into the topic and help me further understand how I can help myself at home.
