What are Dermal Fillers?

Types of Dermal Fillers

There are several types of dermal fillers on the market, but we will focus on the dermal fillers made of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), which your body makes naturally. Often referred to “HA-fillers”, these are non-permanent fillers made of synthetic versions of Hyaluronic Acid mixed with lidocaine, a common numbing agent used to make treatments more comfortable.

The purpose of fillers is the restore volume loss, correct facial asymmetries and balance the face. A big benefit to HA-filler is that they are reversible and can be dissolved if needed. Some examples of these fillers include Juvederm, Juverderm Ultra, Juvederm Voluma, Restylane, Restylane Silk, Restylane Kysse.

Differences Between the Types of Dermal Fillers

Why so many types of filler? Different facial areas need different things! Different fillers have different cohesive properties which determine where they should best be injected. More cohesive fillers tend to be more firm and are injected deep and used where we need to create support, structure and volume, such as the cheeks , jawline and nasolabial folds.

These also tend to have better longevity. Less cohesive fillers are more flexible and soft and are better options for more superficial and mid-depth injections around the tear troughs and in the lips. Your treatment provider will help choose the appropriate filler for your treatment areas during your consultation.

What to Expect from Dermal Fillers

Filler treatments are quite tolerable. A combination of topical numbing cream and/or ice can be used before and during treatment to make things more comfortable. Treatments typically take between 30-45 minutes. Some redness, swelling, and possible bruising is common and expected with filler treatments, so it’s best to plan treatments when you have a few days of “social downtime.” Results last between 6-9 months, or longer, depending on the product, the treatment area and the patient’s metabolism.
