What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?
The Chiropractic Adjustment is a form of therapy that is intended to improve the function of your spine. In this form of chiropractic therapy, the certified chiropractor makes a carefully determined adjustment to the patient’s vertebrae, and other pivotal joints in an effort to relieve pain and restore one’s range of motion. In August of 2016 Runners World Magazine sat down with Christopher Anselmi, D.C., a board-certified chiropractor at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City to understand the importance of a Chiropractic Adjustment. Below we’ve summarized some of the key discussion points to help our patients understand more about their own treatment options.
How can a Chiropractic Adjustment help you?
Studies have shown that properly executed, a Chiropractic Adjustment can help correct musculoskeletal imbalances and improve joint mobility. Improved mobility and reset motion is what allows athletes to run with proper biomechanics and to prevent/treat overuse injuries they are often prone to.
What should you expect from your Chiropractor?
A sports chiropractor will watch you run and test your technique for notable and modest imbalances. After the motion test, they will have you lay on top of a table while they carefully potion you in various ways, while they pull/press your body to align joints.
What kind of treatment plan exists?
Sessions are typically twice a week with reevaluations at two and four weeks. Going back to see your chiropractor to evaluate the chiropractic adjustment can often be the most overlooked aspect of the treatment. In addition to the chiropractic adjustment, there are doctors who provide additional therapies such as massage, Active Release Techniques (ART), or acupuncture.
